Why feng shui? Why art? Why green apples as well as red to grace a fruit bowl? Just because it looks nice? Just because it makes us feel good? Just because... it accesses the divine?
One influence in my childhood opened the door to a world where music and finery and art were not just frivolities, but vital for a balanced life filled with higher thought. That influence was ballet. I have never questioned the power of the world of aesthetics to soothe my soul since then.
Philippe de Montebello, the director of New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, says art showcases mankind's "awe-inspiring ability to surpass itself. No matter how bleak the times, you cannot wholly despair of the human condition."
